A late afternoon, and everything was normal. People getting off work and going home, others going around with friends to hang out and have a beautiful time. The city was booming with voices and cards like no other. A woman walking down the sidewalk with her colleague carrying groceries while she texted someone.

‘Did those two return from their shopping?’ - Noelle said.

‘No responses from either of them. They must be occupied.’ -Jay said.

‘We're going to open soon so I hope those two don’t skip work again.’

‘Calm down Noelle, I'm sure they’ll be back on time. Besides, you should be focusing on work more than they are.’

‘I work!’

‘Getting drunk with the customers is not working. It is stupidity. Please just come back with the groceries on time.’

‘Fine.’ Noelle put her phone away and looked over at Roy “You know your brother can be a wet blanket you know?”

“I am not familiar with that term.” - Roy said.

“You know. Ruining the fun for everyone.”

“My brother is simply looking out for you. But you need to be professional or else we could be in trouble.” Roy looked around to see if there was another store. “Oh. Do you mind if I head to Electra Garden? There could be something the chef needs if I missed it.”

“Sure. I’ll wait outside.”

The both of them headed to the store, Roy went inside and Noelle stayed near the entrance and looked over the news. Heroes saving people, crime rate slowly dwindling and people writing articles about new powers being discovered every week. Noelle saw an article about the #1 Hero, Ares. A bombing incident had occured to a bank and the robbers strapped the civilans with C4, ready to blow them up if things weren’t going their way. Ares thankfully stopped the person with the detonator and dealt with the robbers with ease. Noelle slowly got frustrated while reading the article, clutching her phone hard where it felt like it could snap any second. She snapped out for a moment and looked around to see if anyone was watching her.

‘Fake heroes. You love to see them succeed, while the others die.’ - Noelle thought.

“Umm excuse me ma’am? Do you mind if I ask you for some help?” - the person asked. Noelle looked up from her phone and it was a young man in a black shirt & jeans.

“Sure. What’s up?”

“Do you know the direction of Charlotte’s Web?”

“The female clothing store? Shopping for someone special?” - Noelle prodded at.

“Oh no…well I am for my girlfriend. She loves the clothing there but never has the chance.”

“It’s no problem. It’s-” suddenly she felt very nauseous. She felt like she was going to pass out. “around…the…corner.” Noelle slowly fell to the ground, her body felt heavy, as if she hadn't slept in forever.

“Ma’am? Hello?! Someone?! Can anyone call an ambulance?!” the man yelled.

Roy walked outside, with groceries in his hand, and saw the commotion that was going on. Noelle was fully asleep and the man was on his phone calling for ‘help’.

“What the hell did you do?!” Fire appeared from his hand and grabbed the man.

“I was calling for help. She suddenly passed out.” the man explained but Roy was having none of it.

“If you think i’m buying that bullshit you got…another…thing-” Roy passed out before finishing his sentence. The man picked up his phone and resumed talking to the people.

“I’m sorry, I was being interrupted by one of their friends. Please come as soon as possible.”

Noelle's head was cloudy for a moment. She raised her head and tried to look around to see where she was. Her vision was still a bit blurry and it seems like she couldn’t see anything at all.

“Where…am I?” - Noelle said. She felt her head hurting and tried to touch it but she realized her hands and legs were tied to the chair. “Oh boy.”

“You're finally awake.” - Roy said.

“Well glad to hear one voice I can recognize.”

“The sleeping magic the man produced wasn’t as strong for me but you were out cold for about thirty minutes.”

“Thirty minutes? Damn, I was having a good dream too. Besides the point, we gotta get out of here.”

“That’s another small problem. That man nullified our powers, so we’re basically sitting ducks for the time being.”

The light suddenly turns on, Noelle and Roy finally get a clear vision as to where they are. An abandoned factory. Automated machines that haven’t been used in years, broken windows, the rust on all the equipment and the mess of boxes & supplies.

“Seems like you two are finally awake. Great. Now we can finally talk.” A man in a black suit with sunglasses walked up to the two. Spiky yellow hair and a grin that screams ego. Along with a bunch of his goons behind him. “Seems my boy caught the bartender, Noelle Ackerman and Roy Knox. How’s the business?”

“Going great. We should be opening right now but I am tied up. So you mind untying me before I turn you all into an ashtray.” - Roy threatened.

“I don’t believe so. My client got heads on you and your crew and I'm here to claim my prize.”

“The hero who's been slowly climbing in the ranks. He will do anything to protect the people with a burning smile. The Speed-O Flame Hero - Flaming Blitz. But people call you Blitz.” - Noelle said.

“You did your research on me? That’s sweet of you.”

“You're also the man who made 5 low rank heroes disappear and sold them off to organ donors. Your hero title holds as much weight as a feather.”

Blitz let out a good chuckle. “Oh no. My reputation will go in shambles. Like anyone is going to care about some underrated hero that doesn't bring the bang. They’re just going to be forgotten the next day and everyone will just move on. Not even a journalist would write a story about those useless people. You might as well just retire.”

“Are you speaking from experience? Like how your father left your mother to pursue his dream to become a hero?” - Noelle said.

Blitz smiled and then immediately grabbed her head and kneed it. He then repeatedly threw punches at her face and stomach. Noelle started to bleed from her nose & mouth. Bruises all over her face and chest, she could barely breathe from the onslaught.

“I don’t like it when people act smart. As long as I ain’t damaging the organs. I can treat you however I want.” Blitz snapped his fingers and his goons walked up to them and surrounded them. Two of them took out their knives and put them at their throats. “They’ll be here in about 10 minutes. Cut their throats and clean up the mess.”

“One question before I die. Why did you become a hero?”- Noelle asked.

“Money and fame. A simple goal that will drive me to the top.” - Blitz answered.

Noelle started to laugh hysterically at Blitz’s  comment. Then the laugh started to slowly die down. She opened her eyes and dark cracks came out of it, her pupil became bright gold, and her white sclera slowly turned black.  She had a wide smile on her face and said to him “Thank you.”

She breathed in and breathed out black smoke that filled the room fast. Slowly everyone started to scream and grab their heads, slowly losing their sanity. Finally the screaming stopped and they were staring into the dark abyss, their eyes seemed lifeless.

“Cut off the ropes for Roy and I.” Noelle commanded and so they did, they were finally free. “About time. I was slowly getting used to that.”

Roy put out his hand and then fire came out to the palm of his hand. “Looks like our powers are slowly coming back.”

“Not entirely, I had to use my core in order to do it. But we have to leave now. I don’t know how long it’s going to last. Start finding things to burn, leave them to me.” Roy nodded and left. Noelle breathed in and then out. “Congratulations! You all have earned a spot at killing each other. Last man standing has to kill himself. Don’t start unless I say ``Begin``.”

The goons & Blitz took out their guns & knives. The room slowly started to get more hot as Roy burned more of the factory.

“It is done.”

“Great. Now teleport us out.”

Roy placed his hand on the floor and a magical rune circle appeared from the floor. Before they disappeared Noelle yelled ‘Begin!’ and they started to fight each other. Gunshots started to fly around and people took cover. Blitz used his power to dodge the bullets with ease and beat up his ‘enemies’ with ease. He takes a bullet to the leg but gives a deadly kick to the person who shot him, shattering his ribs.

Few minutes have passed. The factory was in a blaze, the effect wore off the people who were still alive. Blitz sitting on the floor, covering the gunshot wound in his stomach. He was receiving a phone call from one of the donors, he picked up the phone.

“You're late.” - Blitz said.

“I’m sorry. We were slaughtered. By one man.”

“Yeah…” Blitz passed out. The fire got on his clothing and started to burn him slowly.

It was a quiet evening. The sun slowly goes away as the sky turns dark and the stars slowly appear. The light on the apartment complex slowly went away. Inside one of the apartments a mother is preparing a table with food. Three plates with utensils on the side of the plates, all having white rice with mixed vegetables with teriyaki sauce on top, teriyaki chicken and broccoli to the side of the rice.

“Great now everything is done.” - The woman said. Her short messy black hair, tired red eyes and dirty clothes. “Jenny! It’s time to eat!”

The apartment went quiet. No response.

“Jenny!” - she repeated again.

The sound of a door opening and closing echoed in the hallway. A little girl came out of a dark hallway and into the living room. Wearing a black dress that went down to her knees and white socks. Black messy hair and burgundy eyes that looked hopeless.

”I made your plate for you. Just sit down and eat while I go wash up okay?” - Mom said.

“Ok…” Jennifer said under her breath. She went to the table and sat where her food was.

The mother went to the bathroom and went to clean up. While Jennifer was eating she looked at the table and saw the other two plates of food that hadn't been touched.

‘So the loser is coming over.’ - Jennifer thought. There was a knock at the door. Jenny looked at it and ignored it. Another knock at the door and Jenny ignored it.

“I’m coming!” - the mother yelled. She rushed out of the bathroom and answered the door. Her hair was straight down and her face looked like a young adult. “You came, Don! Sorry for not answering.”

“It’s no problem Alessa. I was already running late so we’re even.” - Don said. A tal man with a brush cut and wearing a white dress shirt, blue vest and black pants.

Alessa's face began to turn red and said “You didn’t have to dress like that. It’s just dinner.”

“You know I try my best to impress you.”

“Well come in Don. I don’t want the food to get cold.” - Alessa said.

Aleesa and Don sat across from each other and began to eat. Don peeked at Jenny and her eyes were dead shifted on him. Her eyes and attitude looked like it could kill just by looking at her. He shifted his eyes back to Alessa. The aura in the room felt empty as the clock ticked in the background.

Don decided to break the silence and said“So tell me. How have you been doing, Jenny?” Before Jenny put the fork in her mouth she looked at him as if he did something wrong?

“It’s none of your concern. Also don’t call me ’Jenny’ , it's Jennifer.” - Jennifer pointed out.

“Jenny...please don’t be rude to him.” - Alessa advised.

“It’s alright. I apologize for my rudeness Jennifer.” Don said. “Can you at least try to talk?”

“Why don’t you just go away? It will make me better.” - Jennifer dared Don. She stared at her food and kept playing with the broccoli.

“Jennifer. Please...be respectful to Don. Don’t bring this attitude up again.” Jennifer tossed her plate, got up from the table and went to the door. Alissa got up from the table and her hands on Jeniifer’s shoulders. “Where are you going?”

“Out.” - Jennifer said. She took her mother’s hands off her and left.

Alissa put her hand on the door but didn’t open it. Her hand was shaking in fear on what to do. Don got up from the table, lifted her up from the ground and put her on the couch.

“Sorry about what happened. I know you’re trying your best to make her like me. But I know well she won’t change.” - Don said.

“No matter what I do or say. You won’t change, will you Jenny?” Alessa said while tears rolled down her cheeks “I’m sorry Jenny. I must be hurting you so much.”

Don wiped the tears off her face and said “Please try to relax. Let me try to do this.”

“You saw how she acted towards you now. You can’t change her.” - Alessa clarified to Don but he just laughed it off like it was no big deal.

“I’ve dealt with worse things in my life. She won’t be any different.” Don got up from the couch and before he went outside the door he said “I’ll be back with your princess.”

In the darkness Jennifer was clutched up to herself just looking at nothing. Then a bat flew in front of her face. She didn’t feel scared about it but rather surprised. She put her finger out and the bat went and landed on her finger.

“I see you’re enjoying the pet.” - Don said.

“How did you find me?” - Jennifer asked

“The cute little bat you have. It seems to like you.” - Don said.

“Please get away from me. Last warning.”

Don ignored her and took two steps, Jennifer then quickly got up from the ground and punched him in the stomach. Don sighed,  grabbed it and crouched to her level.

“Talking won’t do much so why don’t I show you.” Don backed up away from her. He closed his eyes and hunched forward. Then a pair of bat wings came out from his back, ripping his clothes. Don opened up his arms like he was waiting for a hug.

“What are you doing?” - Jennifer asked

“It’s the best way to hold on unless you like falling.” - Don said.

“Why should I trust you?” - Jennifer asked.

“I’d rather show and not tell. I promise it will help you.”

Jennifer slowly got closer to Don. She was hesitant at first but she hugged him tight. Don hugged her back as well and his wings started to flap fast and slowly levitate him from the ground. Then he got higher and higher and flew away from the apartment and high to the sky. For a while they have been flying high in the air. Jennifer still has her eyes closed in fear of falling. Then the wind slowed down.

“Did we stop?” - Jennifer asked.

“Yes. Now I want you to open your eyes and look.”

Jennifer slowly opened her eyes and saw the city. The lights shining in the buildings and the beautiful colors that shine in the dark. In Jennifer’s eye’s the world felt wide and breathtaking to her.

“Your mother told me. You dreamed of becoming a hero but you have no powers. I’m here to show you what you want to protect.” - Don said.

“What are you trying to say?” - Jennifer said and felt confused about what’s happening.

“You can be a hero and I will help you.”

Jennifer started to bawl her eyes out in pure joy to finally hear those words. It felt like she finally had the small hope she needed in her life without realizing it.

Jewl slowly opened her eyes to see that it was her sister Amanda sleeping with her. She looked at her face to see if she was sleeping and she was.

‘I must have been having a nightmare again.’ - Jewl thought. She tried to go back to sleep but she couldn’t. She slowly got out of bed and walked around the house. She checked in her parents room to only see her mom. She then went to the living room and lied down on the couch, looking at the ceiling.

‘I wonder how Val and Zane are doing?’ She thought. She raised her hand to the ceiling, pretending to grab something from the air. ‘I had that dream again. Where I was sitting on the sidewalk. It was raining hard.’ Jewl thought to herself. She looked at the palm of her hand in mystery. “Maybe...it’s just my imagination.” She said in a low-tone voice. Her eyes started to feel heavy and slowly she went back to sleep.

A few hours have passed since she fell asleep. Amanda and their mother, Iris, were awake and cleaning the house. Amanda saw that Jewl was sleeping on the couch and chose not to wake her up.

“Amanda, do you mind if you and Jewl went shopping for me? There is something important I have to take care of.” - Iris said.

“Alright. But can I cook for today?” - Amanda asked.

“What do you have in mind?”

“I was thinking Teriyaki Salmon with some rice and vegetables.”

“That sounds very good. Do you want me to help?

“You don’t always have to help mom. I got it on my own. And besides, I got to cook more so she doesn’t starve herself by sleeping all day.”

“Alright. Suit yourself. I left $50 on the counter so you can buy the groceries.”

“Thanks mom.” Iris then left the house leaving the two alone. Amanda took a deep breath and tried to wake up Jewl. She put two fingers up her nose and grabbed her mouth. Jewl started to fidget around trying to breathe. She opened her eyes to see Amanda doing it and just looked disappointed.

    “Hey Amanda.” - Jewl said.

“Now that you’re awake. Let’s go shopping.”

    “But I don’t want to shop mom…”
“I didn’t make the rules. Get up and let's get it over with.”

“Can I sleep for 5 more minutes?”

    “No.”

Jewl wanted to go back to sleep but if she did she knows Amanda will do the trick on her. She got up from the couch, took a shower, put on her dinosaur jacket and left with Amanda. As they are walking down the street, Amanda checks her surroundings for anything unusual. Jewl is just holding a pillow and walking behind her.

“Oh I just remembered.” Amanda pulled out a canned coffee drink from one of the shopping bags and handed it to Jewl. “Here. It’s your favorite. Try to keep your head up at least. You look like a lost child.”

    “But I'm 16.” - Jewl answered.

‘And somehow taller than me but genetics suck.’ Amanda thought to herself. “Not with those tired puppy eyes.”

“Thank you.” Jewl said and took a drink of the coffee.

They arrived at the shopping district. Not many people were here early in the morning. Amanda grabbed Jewl’s hand and started to walk towards the meat department. When she reached there saw the butcher cutting the meat in the back.

“Morning Oliver.” - Amanda says. The butcher stops cutting and looks up to see Amanda and Jewl.

“Amanda! It’s been too long! How has your family been?” - Oliver asked.

“Mom and dad are doing alright. But my mom had to work this morning so I'm grocery shopping.”

“Your mother always came to the best when it came to meat. So the usual?”

“No thank you. I was wondering if you had any salmon in the shop today?”

“I have plenty of salmon that I recently finished deboning.” He grabbed a big slab of sliced salmon and showed it off to Amanda. Amanda thought to herself for a moment.

“Sure. I would like three pounds of it please?”

“Coming right up.” Oliver put a bag on the scale and slowly put in the salmon. “There you go. Three pounds of salmon. That will be $16.24” Amanda handed him the money and received her change. He wrapped up the bag and handed it to her. “Have a good day Amanda.”

    “You too sir.”

“By the way, how is your sister?” - Oliver asked.

“Ernesta is doing alright. Although she worries me a bit.”

“You say that like you’re being a bad big sister. Just don’t worry as much.”

“I know.” Amanda said under her voice and walked away waving Oliver goodbye. ‘Wait.’ She realized Jewl wasn’t with her the whole time. She started to panic a bit to wonder where she was. Amanda retraced her steps and slowly walked around the shopping district. Finally she saw Jewl talking to a woman about the vegetables and fruits she had. Amanda decided to join her and help her pick out stuff. They continue to walk down and Amanda looks at her with a bit of concern. “You alright Jewl? You seem a bit lost.”

“Don’t I always look like that?”

“Yeah but it’s more than usual.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to apologize.”

“Alright…”

They walked around the mart looking for items to cook with. Amanda ponders to herself for a moment. She hasn’t found much interest nor has she found anything on her list. Amanda looked at Jewl and realized she had her eyes on something. Amanda looked in the direction and it was a person selling desserts. Jewl looked at Amanda with puppy eyes.

    “No.” - Amanda says.

“But he’s selling Strawberry Parfaits.” - Jewl says.

    “Then use your allowance money.”

    “I...spent it all.”

    “ON WHAT?!”

    “Stuff.”

    “Did you deathroll with Valerie?”

“Maybe” Jewl whispered under her voice.

Amanda took a deep breath and gave her $10. “Don’t forget you owe me. Let’s just go home.”

They returned home with the items they bought. Jewl laid on the couch and scrolled through her phone on one hand with the parfait on the other. Amanda put all the groceries on the table and started to put them away except for the salmon. She left it out on the stovetop and looked for condiments in the cabinet.

Jewl ponders to herself for a moment, thinking on what to say. “Hey Amanda. I had that dream again.” Amanda doesn’t look surprised but still a bit concerned. “But something changed about it.”

“Oh what was different about it?”

“You were there.”

Amanda looks surprised but kept it hidden for the time. “I guess that would make sense. I mean don’t you ever think of your friends in your dreams?”

“No. It never happened once. But when you appeared. I felt pure joy.” Jewl smiled.

Amanda paused for a moment. She didn’t know how to feel. “Well. I’m glad that nightmare isn’t haunting you as much now. Anyways do you mind if-” Jewel was passed out on the couch with the phone on her leg. ‘Never mind then. Guess I should start preparing.’

It was late afternoon. The sky was covered in gray clouds, pouring heavy rain. Traffic was heavy, people walking around with their umbrellas. Passing a little girl who was standing in the rain. The little girl looked on as everyone passed, not calling for help. Her body was tired, eyes dread and empty. She sat down on the wet side walk and curled up. It felt like time was moving slow with each passing second. The little girl accepted that nobody would come to help her. Until the rain stopped pouring on her head. She slowly looked up to see another kid, holding an umbrella over her. They were wearing their school uniform and looking at them.

“You shouldn’t be sitting there you know.” The student said and reached out her arm to her. “Come with me. I’ll take you somewhere dry.”

The girl thought about it for a moment and hesitated to reach her arm out. But the student still stayed.

“Leave...me.” the girl said in a very low tone.

“No. Let's go.” - The Student says.

She did what the student said. She grabbed their hand and walked with them. She made sure to not let go of her hand.

“What’s your name?” - The student asked.

    “Ernesta.” - she said.

“Nice to meet you. My name is Amanda.”

Jennifer was relaxing in her bedroom, looking outside the window, bored out of her mind. Homework was done, she knew she had to study but is choosing not to.

“Should I take a small trip to the underworld? Doesn’t seem like much would be going on.” - Jennifer said.

Jennifer got up and closed her eyes. She put out both of her hands and slowly the room turned red.

“Open, gates of the underworld.” she said and then a dark red portal opened in front of her. She hopped right in and the portal closed immediately.

Jennifer looked around the desolate wasteland and felt like something seemed off.

“Odd. The energy seems more rampant today. I hope I don’t come across them. That’ll just ruin the fun.” - Jennifer said.

In the distance, Jennifer saw a small blue flame on the ground. She stopped and looked around for a moment.

‘Odd. Blue fire all the way out here?’ - Jennifer thought.

She slowly walked up the weird fire, as she got closer she realized it may not be a fire. She started to hear whistling in the distance as she got closer. Finally, she reached the weird blue flame but it turned out to be a decapitated head whistling a tune. The thing stopped as if they noticed someone was there.

“I wonder how my body is doing, besides fighting those demons?” - the head said.

“The hell?” - Jennifer said.

“Oh is someone here? Well if you're going to be scared of a talking head again. Put my head down lightly please.” - The head asked.

Jennifer picked up the head and inspected it. The blue flame was small but a bit fierce, their eyes being covered by bandages, and short smooth black hair.

“A talking head?”

“Hello. I can grant you three wishes if you want.” Jennifer went from interested to severely uninterested. “Okay, jokes aren’t your thing. Got it.”

“I have a few questions for you. If you don’t mind answering.” - Jennifer asked.

“Sure but could you at least get me to my body? Seems like it’s doing its own thing.”

‘They seem very oblivious to where they are, or do they know anything about the demons. Guessing by the weakened cores that is where the fighting ended.’ Jennifer put the head on one arm and walked to the location. “Do you mind me asking your name?”

“Verena. Dullahan Boxer.”

“Jenny. Step-Daughter of the Demon King.”

“Ah. Royalty.”

“Yeah if it was a bloodsport.” Jennifered said under her breath. “How did you even get here?”

“I don’t know. I was walking home after my shift and then suddenly my body got really tired. And I woke up with my head missing from my body.”

“Best guess is they probably thought you were dead. However, they didn’t recognize your core.”

“A core?”

“It’s their source of power that never drains out. Not only that, they can regenerate from their core too. Making them nearly immortal until you destroy the core.”

“Well I think you look nothing like the demons I saw.  You feel a bit more humanlike, minus the eyes and the horns.”

“It’s a bit complicated.”

As they slowly reach their destination Jennifer saw a couple of bodies on the floor. Some with holes in their chest or missing arms. It felt like a battle that ended minutes ago. As they continue, the piles of bodies continue to increase. Missing limbs, purple blood on the ground and barely breathing demons. Finally they found Verena’s body, sitting on one of the demon’s back, covered in blood.

Verena on a pile of demons

“That is a lot of dead bodies.” - Verena said.

“They’re not dead, it takes a while for their body to regenerate.” Jennifer walked up to Verena’s body and gave back her head. The body reached for it and put it back to where it was. “Better?”

“A lot better! Although I’m going to have to change bandages when I go back.”

“Ehh. It’ll burn off.”

“It will what?”

“Moving on. We should probably be heading out fast. One of the elites might show up soon because of the negative energy.”

“More fighting? With the two of us, I’m sure we can take them on.”

Jennifer didn’t answer and has been focusing to see if anyone was coming their way. For now she felt nothing. Jennifer walked up to one of the bodies, plunged her arm deep into their chest and pulled out a dark red orb nearly as big as her head.

“Catch.” Jennifer said and tossed the orb to Verena. Verena catched it with both hands and is surprised at how light it is. “Keep it if you ever go back to your world. Might come in handy.”

“I wonder if Sgaph would like this?” Verena thought. “Where is this mighty threat you’re hyping up? Seems like none of them are showing up.”

“I’m trying to search for them but it’s kind of hard to sense that.”

“I’m sure the both of us can candle them. I beat these demons up like it was a light workout. What could be-” Verena stopped in her words as she felt something cold touch her shoulder. A man in a business attire appeared right behind her. The aura around him felt like a ferocious caged monster, waiting on its next prey.

“Thank you for playing with my daughter. But I believe it’s time for you to go.” - someone said.

Jennifer heard that familiar voice and turned around instantly. She saw her step-father right next to Verena. Verena was stiff, she had her sights on Jennifer the whole time.

“Don’t do anything to her Don.” - Jennifer said.

“Why shouldn’t I? She has been causing trouble here and I am here to exterminate the problem.” - Don said.

“Maybe…we can talk this out?” - Verena asked.

Don looked at Jennifer then Verena. “No thank you.”

Verena was uncertain on what to do, she thought of every possible scenario but came up with nothing. So she chose to rely on her instinct instead. She turned and went for a swift but hard right hook to his face. It felt like time slowed down and every small moment counted. One of Don’s eyes turned black and shed a tear. Suddenly everything turned black. Verena woke up out of her bed, breathing and heavy and looking around her room.

“Was that a dream?” Verena asked herself and touched her head. “Ouch. My head hurts like hell. What time is it?” Verena took her phone out of the charger and checked the time. “Six in the morning. Wait. It’s May already? Time sure loves to go fast huh.”

Verena got out of bed and went to walk out of her room, suddenly she kicked a round orb. She clutched her foot immediately in pain and tried to soothe the pain.

“When did I have an orb in my-” she stopped herself to realize that it was the orb Jennifer gave her as a gift. “Jenny?”

Back in the underworld, Jennifer looked distraught as Verena disappeared from her eyes. The rage and anger was slowly swelling up in her body, looking at Don, ready to kill.

“If you’re wondering, I returned her to her world.” - Don said.

“Don’t you fucking lie to me.” - Jennifer said calmly.

“There are many things I can lie to you about. That was not one of them. How I pulled her soul is something I am trying to figure out.”

Jennifer calmed herself down a bit. “So she’s alright?”

“At the time, yes. If I am correct, about a month has passed in her world but we’ll never know. This place loves to influx when it comes to time.”

Spectre

Jun. 25th, 2021 03:24 pm
storytellersilvic: (Default)

It was late in the morning. Spectre passed out on the couch in their messy apartment. The TV was running the news, talking about the latest hero’s passing. Suddenly there was a knock at the door and it slightly woke them up but they went back to sleep. A few more knocks at the door but they were still asleep. Until three loud knocks finally woke them up and made them fall off the couch.

“It’s too early in the morning for this.” - Spectre got up from the floor and walked to the door. When she opened the door they saw their boss, Roark. “Hey boss.”

“Morning Spectre. Mind if I can enter?” - Roark said.

“Sure come inside.” Roark comes inside and sits at the table. He puts down a briefcase and opens it, pulling out three files.

“Got some important things to tell you. But I feel like you’ll only like one of them.” - Roark said.

“I’ve dealt with worse.” Spectre sat down with a cup of coffee in their hands and looked over the files. “So are these my targets?”

“Yes and no. Two of them are villains, readying for a big turf war soon. Eli, leader of the fire bandits against Rosalia, queen of the Riot Berserkers.”

“Wouldn’t they kill each other in the turf war?” - Spectre questioned.

“I asked him the same question. However he had a different proposition. If both leaders are dead then either two things will happen. It will be a bloodfest and another leader will rise to the occasion and win. Meaning that their bounty will be higher than the leaders we killed. The other is that they don’t fight, thus ending both of the factions.” - Roark explained.

“That’s why we’re being underpaid?  $20k isn’t bad but I have done less for more. But if this stupid gamble will work then i’m in on it. But what about the third file?” - Spectre said.

“That’s the second thing I wanted to talk about. You’ll be having a new partner.” When he said that, Spectre looked at him in disbelief.

    “What?”

“As much as I don’t want to. I have to. And you know why.”

“I can and will do this solo. I don’t need some pathetic bodyguard.” - Spectre said.

“You’re a good marksman. You can probably take down 30 men with just your sniper and pistol. But this is serious. More hunters are being killed by our own men. Information being sold to heroes for immunity.” - Roark said. Spectre tried to say something but couldn’t think of anything for a rebuttal. They took a sip of their coffee and looked in anguish. They then took a deep breath and exhaled.

“I don’t know if I am ready for another partner. How do I know I can trust him?” - Spectre asked.

“I’ve taken him on a few expeditions with me. He seems all right. One thing he mostly talks about is protecting a special someone. It doesn’t even look like he does it for the money either.” - Roark said.

    “Then for what?”

“Who knows. Not even I can barely read the man.”

Spectre thought to themselves for a moment and was thinking of other possibilities but it felt like they didn’t have an option.

“Fine, I'll accept the terms. But I will say this. If he even thinks about stepping out of line with me. I will kill him on the spot.” - Spectre said. Roark seemed a bit surprised and laughed.

In a world where powers mean everything Jennifer was one of unfortunate people to be born with no powers. She always looked up to heroes as a child and wanted to become one but she gave up on her dream due to her father's verbal abuse. Telling her she's useless and she will never be anything special. At eight years old her father left her along with her mother for good. She still echoed the words to this day.
